We built the data highway so you don't have to wait for one.
Metro Optic owns and operates private fiber optical infrastructure across Canada, with dense metro fiber in Montréal, Toronto and Vancouver. And if we don't reach your destination, we use our trusted carrier partners for the last mile. Seamless.
Our why
Carrier-neutral fiber built for the AI Era.
Metro Optic started with a simple frustration. High-capacity fiber existed, but getting it meant fighting through layers of big-telco bureaucracy, accepting a shared backbone, and never quite knowing whose network your packets were crossing.
So we built our own. Custom-built dark fiber, designed route by route to connect major data centres and key business hubs across Montréal, Toronto and Vancouver. Most of our fiber is buried underground, delivering the resilience and reliability businesses expect from a premium network. Three dense metro networks, owned and operated by Metro Optic. And we're not stopping there: our Maple Leaf Fibre long-haul route between Montréal and Toronto, along with expansion into Calgary, are on the roadmap. We light it, we route it, and we operate independently of any carrier or cloud provider. That independence gives your team more control: dedicated dark fiber to run your own optics, or fully managed lit capacity with our team handling the network.
And our reach doesn't stop where our fiber does. Metro Optic connects sites across Canada, coast to coast. Where our network doesn't reach your location, trusted carrier partners provide the last mile into our backbone. We design, deliver and manage the complete service, giving you national coverage with a single point of contact. That flexibility lets us build the right solution around your traffic, your locations and your requirements.
What we hold to
The principles behind the network.
Conscious connectivity
We aim for green efficiency because a sustainable infrastructure drives Canada's digital future responsibly.
Engineers, not quote desks
When you call, an engineer who knows the network picks up. Designs, latency figures and changes come from the people who run the fiber every day.
Best path obsession
We reject the status quo. We push boundaries and don't stop until the best result is achieved for your infrastructure.
Open communication
We build relationships on radical transparency. If a service doesn't align with your goals, we will tell you upfront. No overselling, no hidden fees.
How we got here
Over two decades of connecting Canada's digital infrastructure.
-
2000
Metro Optic is founded
Founded at the height of the IT revolution, Metro Optic began as a telecom reseller to SMBs and a data center business, owning and operating one of the oldest data centers in Quebec at 875 St-Antoine.
-
2015/16
Acquisition by Tandem
In 2015, Tandem Holdings acquired Metro Optic, and the company began a new journey under the leadership of Michael Bucheit. For a few more years, it ran as a colo-connectivity hybrid.
-
2019
Cologix acquires Metro Optic
North American data center giant Cologix acquired and integrated Metro Optic's data center assets. Metro Optic refocused as an independent builder and operator of massively scalable fiber optic networks across Canada, and has grown its network exponentially since, with partnerships as the pillar of its new direction.
-
2023
Metro Optic launches the Expo Route
A redundant, geo-diverse fiber ring of more than 200 km, linking Montréal's South Shore to Metro Optic's network on the island and reaching 30+ large-scale data centers.
-
2026
Vancouver network expansion
Metro Optic expanded its Vancouver metro network, extending its reach on the Pacific coast.
